The Hong Kong government recently launched the EV-charging at Home Subsidy Scheme (EHSS), injecting HK$3.5 billion in two phases to subsidize the installation of electric vehicle charging infrastructure in eligible existing private housing estate car parks, making it easier for car owners to install chargers in the parking spaces of the housing estates where they live.

The entire program is expected to help approximately 700 existing private housing estate car parks, with a total of 140,000 parking spaces, to complete the installation of charging infrastructure by 2027/28.

The first batch of housing estates successfully installed the system and received enthusiastic response

Among the first three housing estates in Yuen Long, Wan Chai and Kowloon City that have completed the installation of charging facilities, the owners' committees of some housing estates described the plan as “Awesome!”.

During the interview, electric vehicle owners unanimously said:

It is very convenient to charge at home. You can charge it when you get home from get off work.

It only needs to be charged once every 2 to 3 days, and each time it lasts for 6 to 7 hours, which is enough for daily travel;

In the past, the monthly gasoline bill was about HK$3,000 to 4,000, but now the monthly electricity bill is only about HK$300 yuan, saving more than 10 times.

Car owners support environmental protection and welcome government funding.

Some car owners in housing estates said that they had already switched to electric vehicles before the government launched the subsidy scheme.

Electric vehicles have zero emissions and do not emit exhaust gas, which is beneficial to the environment;
